Welcome to Germany’s Christmas markets, which date back to the 12th century, where the old traditions live on in medieval cathedrals, castles and fairy tale palaces. Stalls set up by local artisans are piled high with toys, crafts, souvenirs and many traditional Christmas gifts, like the famous nutcrackers from the Ore Mountains on the Czech border. Christmas also brings its host of mouth-watering delicacies. Just follow your nose and you’ll find spiced wine, dampfnudeln (sweet yeast dumplings), hot chestnuts, pfeffernüsse (ginger and cinnamon biscuits), honey cake, stollen (Christmas cake), Nussbrot (nut bread), grilled sausages and Bethmännchen (marzipan balls with almonds).
