Châteaux of the Loire |
![]() |

Steeped in history, the region of the
Loire symbolises all that is great about
France. From fabulous châteaux with
fairy tale turrets and crisp Vouvray wines,
to delicious orchard fruits and some of
the finest cheeses in Europe, it really is a
land of romance, beauty and intrigue.
Itinerary
Day 1 Transfer by coach to port, and join the ferry
crossing to Calais. Drive through Belgium into
France, visiting the cathedral at Chartres en route:
home to a magnificent collection of 150 stained
glass windows donated by royalty, aristocracy
and rich merchants. Experience the kaleidoscope
of radiant colour in this awe-inspiring place of
worship. Continue to Tours and arrive at your hotel
for a three-night stay.
Day 2 Enjoy the morning at leisure in Tours, the
ancient capital of France, whose most atmospheric
quarter is undoubtedly the Place Plumereau; a
charming square in the medieval heart of the
city. Discover cafes, boutiques, galleries and
quaint streets with half-timbered houses, hidden
courtyards and crooked towers.
In the afternoon, join the included trip to the
extraordinary and very feminine Château
Chenonceau. Found on the river Cher, it was
created by women, including Katherine Briçonnet
and Diane de Poitier, and offers beautiful
ornamental gardens with climbing roses and
fragrant flowers.
Day 3 Following breakfast, you have the day at
leisure. Alternatively, join our optional Châteaux
d’Amboise and de Chambord excursion, providing
the opportunity to visit some the most stunning
châteaux in the Loire. Historically one the most
important, Château Amboise was once inhabited
by Louis 16th. Then continue to Chambord, home
to the extravagant François I. The largest castle in
the Loire, it has 485 rooms and beautiful conicaltopped
towers, chimneys, pinnacles and turrets.
Day 4 We leave to return to port, with a short
en route stop in Amiens. Capital of Picardy, it is
renowned for its Gothic cathedral and acres of
gardens criss-crossed by little canals reached
only by foot or boat. Arrive at port in time for an
evening crossing back to the UK, from where you
will return to your original pick-up point.
