Bilbao’s Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) is one of the most intriguing in the world. It is also home to some very interesting bars and restaurants that the walker may find very rewarding.
The entire Old Quarter has been declared a national landmark, and it’s not hard to see why. Its most important church is the Iglesia de San Nicolás. Behind the church, you’ll find an elevator that will carry you to the upper town, or you can climb the 64 steps, which will lead you to the Basílica de Begoña, built in the early 1500s. Inside the dimly lit church is a brightly illuminated depiction of the Virgin, the patroness of the province.
