Located 8 miles north of Derby, the Denby Visitor Centre showcases the pottery Denby has been producing for over 200 years, and offers an array of products from crockery to ornaments in distinctive designs and sophisticated colours. Each piece of Denby is an original and goes through 25 pairs of hands before it is ready for sale. The unique Denby glaze is also known for the colour variations that can occur. If the colour varies beyond strict tolerance levels, or has imperfections such as spots of uneven colour, Denby designates the product as a 'second'. Therefore the quality of seconds is extremely high and every piece has the same durability as the perfect items. Of course you can pick up ‘seconds’ at bargain prices here at the Visitor Centre. In addition to pottery, the Visitor Centre has many shops. There’s the Glass Studio filled with products created by the traditional art of glass blowing, which include tabletop pieces, goblets, decanters, candlesticks, decorative bowls and vases. There’s also the Kitchen Emporium with a vast selection of top-name cooking utensils and gadgets, and a Demonstration Theatre where the latest equipment is put to the test live twice a day. If you’re lucky to be in the centre for a demonstration, you can sample the results and take home the recipes. As well as a Garden Centre, well-stocked for the discerning gardener, there’s a cosy traditional restaurant serving a selection of home-made dishes, including the popular house special Homity Pie.
