Join this wonderful route, travelling from the region of Lower Saxony to Hesse. Picturesque villages with half-timbered houses, gurgling brooks and magnificent castles and palaces all create a unique fairy tale scene, where stories of Sleeping Beauty, the Pied Piper and Rapunzel come magically to life.
Itinerary
Day 1 Transfer by coach to port for your morning crossing to Calais. Travel, via Dortmund, to Kassel, home to the fabulous Wilhelmshöhe Palace. It was here the famous and well-loved ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ were compiled and edited. You’ll be surrounded by an oasis of green, cascading waterfalls and an enormous statue of Hercules. Arrive at your hotel in time for an included evening meal.
Day 2 After breakfast, you have the morning to explore Kassel. In the afternoon, travel to Hofgeismar, home to the oldest half-timbered church in Germany, said to be home to Sleeping Beauty and the giants’ Schöneberg Castle. The nearby Reinhardswald Forest is the setting for the legendary Puss in Boots story.
Day 3 Following breakfast, there is free time for you to explore your surroundings. Alternatively,join our optional excursion to Hamelin. Visit this picturesque town where the Pied Piper enticed all the children away forever with his melodies.
Day 4 Spend the day at leisure, or perhaps take advantage of our optional ‘medieval towns oflegend and folklore’ excursion. Visit the little town of Gudensberg, with its two castle ruins dominating the skyline against Odenberg Mountain. Continue then to the town of Alsfeld, home to a special fountain where legend has it newborn babies are delivered. Lastly, you’ll see the quaint village of Neukirchen; where Rapunuzel let down her hair for the Prince to climb, also home to a museum and a 16th century house of fairy tales.
Day 5 After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel and transfer to Calais for your Channel
crossing to the UK. Upon arrival you will be
returned to your original pick-up point.
Please note Passengers taking the overnight crossing from the north of England or Scotland will depart the day before and return to their original
departure point a day later.
