Located on the edge of the Black Forest, Freiburg, a beautifully preserved old town is dominated by the spectacular tower of its Gothic cathedral. Once in Freiburg, it’s easy to see why the town is protected as a national monument. The Munsterplatz is one of Germany’s most beautiful cathedral squares and here you’ll find the Christmas markets, a host of tempting cafes and restaurants specialising in the local cuisine, as well as shops packed with regional produce including the delicious Kirschwasser (Black Forest cherry schnapps).
On the same day we include a visit to the charming Swiss town of Basle. Nestling in a loop of the River Rhine, Basle offers a delightful blend of old and new buildings, a well-preserved old town, Switzerland’s oldest university, elegant boutiques, lively bars and superb restaurants that excel in traditional local cuisine.
