Salzburg & Berchtesgaden

This excellent excursion begins with a visit to Salzburg – The Sound of Music city – idyllically located on the banks of the River Salzach. Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace, is a delight from the very first sight of the outline of its beautiful buildings. Visit the imposing Hohensalzburg Castle, which stands 400ft above the town, step inside the Baroque-style cathedral and see the font where Mozart was baptised, or perhaps visit Mozart’s home. Its picturesque streets with their wrought iron signs, spacious squares with sculptured fountains, the noble architecture, the extraordinary Glockenspiel clock, elegant shops, gardens and street markets.

Next we’ll visit Berchtesgaden, which lies in the south-eastern corner of Bavaria, driving a wedge into Austrian territory. It is enclosed by high Alpine peaks with precipitous rock faces and is perhaps the best known tourist town and one of the most popular climatic resorts in the Bavarian Alps. It is surrounded by mountains and is popular with skiers in the winter months. The town has many beautiful buildings with painted façades, and the attractive landscape provided the backdrop for a number of scenes in the famous film The Sound of Music.
