Leaving Honningsvåg, we drive through wild, desolate landscape to the North Cape, situated on the island of Magerøy. In 1988 a new ‘experience centre’ was opened at North Cape. The complex has souvenir shops, a post office, Chapel, bar and large restaurant. An underground tunnel takes you to the Royal North Cape Hall or ‘The Grotto’ as it is also called.
|
Our tour starts in the new Information and Adventure Centre, ‘Polaria’, which has a gift shop and cafeteria, and whose architecture resembles blocks of ice sliding into the ocean. Then visit Tromsdal Church, ‘The Arctic Cathedral’ on the mainland, which has Europe’s largest stained-glass window. A cable car will take us up pine-clad mountainside from a base station in Tromsdalen, across the strait from the centre of the town.
|
Visit the Polar Museum, housed in an old customs warehouse. Continue with a drive to Tromsø Wilderness Centre, where you will visit a husky kennel. On arrival you will be offered a welcome drink before seeing a fascinating slide show given by the kennel owners. There will be opportunity to purchase coffee and waffles and buy souvenirs at the small gift shop before returning to the ship.
|
We start by driving through the town and continue on a round-trip of the island, passing through rich farm land and sandy beaches on the west side of the island, which contrast with the weather-beaten rocks behind them. At the village of Mortsund, we can enjoy a light snack of coffee/tea and a salmon sandwich. On our return to Gravdal, we shall stop at the viewpoint near Unstad.

With a beautiful setting across several islands stretching out to sea, the charming Norwegian fishing port of Ålesund is renowned for its beautiful art nouveau architecture with fairy tale towers, spires and medieval-romantic façades.
Welcome to the top of the world! The town of Honningsvåg is set in a land of dramatic fjords and crashing waterfalls, and wildlife lovers will find flora and fauna in abundance, ranging from puffins and auks, to mink and even reindeer. Here you can enjoy the awe-inspiring sight of the Midnight Sun hanging above the Arctic Ocean. A truly unforgettable experience that really does have to be seen to be believed.
The lively Norwegian city of Tromsø is set on a wooded island close to the wild nature of the polar region to the north. The city is home to an extraordinary church built in the shape of an iceberg, plus Norway’s most northerly brewery; home of the legendary Arctic Ale.
The astonishing Lofoten Islands sit dramatically off Norway’s northern coast, far beyond the Arctic Circle, offering beautiful scenery and a variety of unique wildlife including puffins, eagles and seals. Steep, rocky mountains rise sharply from the water’s edge, providing a stunning backdrop to the attractive town of Gravdal.
