Ghent

With more listed buildings than any other city in Belgium, and over 300 bars and cafes conveniently sited in the central area, some pleasantly located on the canal’s edge, Ghent is built for leisure. Dark and seductive brews include Kwak and La Gauloise Brune, while also worth sampling are the genevers (gins) at the ‘Dreupelkot’ by the Waterhuis, with over 200 varieties, including a rather fiery chilli-pepper genever. Cuisine-wise, try the Ghent Stoverij stew, with its distinctively rich sauce of beer, butter and onions. In the historic heart of the city you’ll find impressive towers, a cathedral, ancient bridges across the canals and, nearby, a medieval fortress, complete with turrets, arrow slits and moat.
